Smart Mobility research area

In this research area we address the problems related to the current limited diffusion of the modality for people sustainable mobility, with particular reference to: urban and extra-urban mass transport services, carsharing, carpooling, and bike sharing. It starts from the observation that this limit is mainly related to the following aspects:

  • poor diffusion and difficult accessibility to the updated and complete information on the mobility services available, with particular with reference to those needed for inter-operator mobility services; in fact, very often some information is inaccessible, not visible, difficult to understand, too detailed, unmanageable, so that it is systematically ignored;
  • difficulty in using the various modes of sustainable transport in an integrated mode due to the use of procedures and instruments designed in isolation and not open to interactions with external systems;
  • high propensity of people to use private cars and little awareness of the efficiency and benefits of using sustainable transport services.
With the aim of addressing these critical issues, this research area focuses on the diffusion of innovative technological tools for:

  1. communication to users: to provide the service users with (in a simple way to acquire) accurate, reliable and real-time information of transport and mobility services (collective and individual) through web and mobile channels and through innovative systems that are able to communicate and dialogue with those of transport service providers;
  2. facilitating the use of services: developing integrated technological and IT services to facilitate the use of transport services with the simplicity introduced by the use of mobile devices, including: booking a vehicle sharing service, being supported in the use of public services by a navigator, performing the purchase / payment of service tickets;
  3. persuasion of the user: providing users on the move with tools for monitoring their own behavior (personalized information) in order to have information in the format and content requested (“tailor-made” information, for example on their origin / destination ) and become aware of their own attitudes of mobility and persuade them towards the use of more sustainable modalities.
Towards these objectives, the laboratory collaborates with transport engineers and researchers and with transport services providers.
